SeoulGrid Guide to Clubbing Vol. 10

What’s up SeoulGrid? James here, with big Vol. 10, and that calls for some sort of celebration! This week, Friday is a national holiday, so get ready for another three-day weekend of festivities.

On Thursday night we have two great DJs coming in: DJ Falcon and Zombie Nation. Friday’s a bit quiet. But on Saturday afternoon, we can all enjoy the fine weather with a brunch buffet and mamosas on the rooftop of Platoon. Then on Saturday night, one of the most raved about DJs of the last year is coming to Eden: Gui Boratto.

So let’s get started, shall we?

Party Info:

Thurs @ LUV: DJ Falcon

As a producer, DJ Falcon is probably best known for his collaborations with Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk (video above). However, he’s really built his name as a performer rather than a producer. His style is a complete mashup that’s impossible to describe. I’m not even going to try, just check out this mix of his:

http://www.whosyamama.com/mixes/Falcon.mp3

[It's like an hour long, so just put it on to pump you up while you're getting dressed for a night out. Or if you're short on time, just skip around, because he really mixes up a lot of different styles -- old school, hip hop, indie rock... This mix gets utterly insane starting around the 8:00 mark. Does anyone know what the name of this track is? Lovin' it.]

Clearly one talented dude.

Club LUV is a chic new lounge that just opened up in Itaewon. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. This is going to be a really cool show, definitely worth checking out.

Cover is 20,000. The party goes from 10pm to 5am, with DJ Falcon probably starting around 12:30am – 1am.

Directions:

Itaewon Station, exit 1. From there… Well, Club LUV made this easy for me. Here’s the simplest venue map I’ve ever seen. Thanks, LUV:

Thurs @ Volume: Zombie Nation

Zombie Nation’s 1999 hit Kernkraft 400 is undoubtedly one of the most famous techno tracks of all time. Anyone who went to college in America has probably heard this epic at stadium sporting events like this one.

Zombie Nation has continued to produce tracks since. Here’s one of his latest: Zombie Nation – Time Machine Mix (Part 1)

Not sure if you want to check out DJ Falcon or Zombie Nation? Well the good news is they’re both in Itaewon! So for the brave among you, feel free to try to hit both shows one after another, or even taxi back and forth between them throughout the night.

Directions:

- By subway: Come out Noksapyeong station exit 3 and head south. Look for Crown Hotel on the opposite side of the road.

- By taxi: tell the driver “Itaewon Crown Hotel.”

.

Fri @ Eden: “EZ-House”

Resident Djs: E-You & Ziro

Party with Eden’s resident DJs. Their resident DJs usually play Tech House and Minimalism.

Fri @ Volume: “Clubbers Guide”

DJs: Jaimo, Flow Dabbler, Wu, SoUL (Korea)

Here’s a video of DJ SoUL spinning in Volume a year and a half ago.

These are Korean DJs who play a mix of progressive, hard trance, and house. There’s also a live emcee.

Directions:

- By subway: Come out Noksapyeong station exit 3 and head south. Look for Crown Hotel on the opposite side of the road.

- By taxi: tell the driver “Itaewon Crown Hotel.”

Fri @ Heaven: “La Vie En Rose”

Featured DJ: Catalyst (Korea)

Catalyst is one of Heaven’s resident DJs. Heaven’s resident DJs normally play tech / progressive house.

[Top Pick] Gui Boratto @ Eden

Gui Boratto @ Club Eden, Seoul

Gui Boratto is being raved about by clubbers around the world as one of the top producers of 2009. Reading reviews if his performances is like receiving a lethal injection of superlatives, encountering an overdose of adjectives like ‘amazing’, ‘legendary’, and ‘ubelievable’. He’s considered to be a cannot-miss-performance; thus, taking the lead of the thousands of fans who swear by his shows, I’m recommending him as top pick.

Hailing from Brazil, he originally came from a background as a mainstream music producer until he left his career to go underground and produce his own music. So how exactly do we pronounce his name? It’s ‘Gi’, with a hard G like ‘grape’. Like the Karate uniform — not ‘Gee’ as in “golly gee willickers,” and definitely not like ‘Gooey’. And no, it’s not ‘Guy’ either, no matter what anyone says.

Enjoying that song? Here, have another:

Pet Shop Boys-Love Etc (Gui Boratto Remix)

His style is somewhere in the midst of melodic tech house, deep house, dark house, and minimal. It’s not my typical style, but listening to his music, it’s impossible to deny that the guy [pun sooo intended... But seriously, it's pronounced 'Gi'] is incredibly talented. In fact, his live sets have a reputation for being enjoyable to everyone, even people who don’t listen to electronic music.

Check it out on Saturday, and your ears are in for a musical feast.

DAY EVENT: Sat @ Platoon: “Eat Cake”

Eat… Cake? Well we all know I’m a huge fan of cookies, and cake is pretty awesome too… But no, this isn’t a bake-off.

It’s a daytime rooftop mimosa and brunch buffet party. Wait, let’s slow down for a second… Any one of the descriptors in the previous sentence alone would be enough to sell me on this event, but that’s right — we just combined all of them into one cohesive sentence.

Rooftop. Daytime. Mimosas. Brunch buffet. Party.

Umm, let’s see… Is there anything else? Oh yeah, music. We like music too. Oh, and barbecue. That’s right — if you come too late for brunch, just feast on barbecue. Sometimes life just keeps getting better, doesn’t it?

And it’s hosted at one of my favorite venues in Seoul: Platoon. Platoon is a sick venue with four differently-themed floors, built entirely from shipping crates. Click the link for photos and more information. The Eat Cake party is being held on the open-air 4th floor rooftop. [Thanks to Mike Porto for his Platoon review this week -- he actually wrote the review before we heard about this party, but perfect timing.]

The party starts at 1:30 and goes until sunset. Cover is 20,000, which includes access to the brunch buffet. DJs at the event are Matheus K from Sweden, Baya, and Mo’chi.

This party is a really welcome addition to the scene, and a nice change of pace in my opinion. Sometimes it’s fun to start the festivities before 9pm on the weekend. So don’t party too late on Friday, otherwise I’m gonna clean the buffet before you get there. Haha. [And as a side note, I hope they do actually serve cake. Then my life would be complete.]

Sat @ Answer: DatA

Too much of a good thing is in fact a bad thing. Answer keeps bring in DJs that I really want to see on the same nights as other DJs that I really want to see! Why?! Whyyyyy?! Curse you, life, and your difficult choices.

There’s the tell-tale French-electro sound, what may be the epitome of “nu-disco”, and catchy pop vocals layered overtop of it. I can just tell these guys would shred the dance floor. But alas, they’re competing with Gui Boratto. Quite unfortunate, that.

But check out another track, just in case:

Data – Aerius Light

Hey, if it’s your style, then no top-100 DJ can keep you from making the show. Hell, I myself am tempted to pass up Gui just to rock out on the DatA dancefloor. We’ll see what happens.

As a side note, I had a ridiculous time trying to find information about this group due to his ubiquitous choice of monicker [Yeah, just trying googling "data." Oh good, that's exactly what I was looking for.] Come on, dude. At least pick an abnormal spelling. Anyway, here’s his myspace: DatA MySpace

DJ Ahn (Korea) is Volume’s longstanding resident DJ. His normal style is trance.

- By taxi: tell the driver “Itaewon Crown Hotel.”
