Your Guide to Premium Nightlife in Seoul

Club Review – Mass @ Gangnam Stn.

Posted by Richard On January - 25 - 2010

There are 3 clubs that represent clubs around Gangnam Stn area (Subway line #2, or the green line).  The three brothers include NB and Harlem, two of the only hip hop clubs situated south of the Han River. The third club is Club Mass, which describes itself as “premier electronic house music club in Seoul”, and I give them credit for getting the description right more or less… perhaps they included an extra word that does more than justice.

Of course, there are other clubs around the area.  Club Eden for example, is about 15 minutes by walk from Gangnam St. #7, but in my opinion, such a mega club caters to a different type of clientèle or guests altogether.  Mega clubs such as Club Eden, Volume, or Heaven all have entrance cover fee of 30,000 Won while NB, Harlem, and Mass cost around 15,000 to 20,000 Won.  Costs of drinks in those 3 clubs are generally cheaper than aforementioend mega clubs, where a shot of tequila ranges from 5,000 Won to 10,000.  In comparison, a tequila shot costs around 5,000 in Mass/NB/Harlem.  So the pricing difference itself acts as a mechanism to bring in different types of people.  Club Mass, in effect, attracts casual Gangnam clubbing crowd.

Several world-class DJs performed at Mass: James Lavelle, DJ Sneak, DJ Disciple & Kenny Dope.  While the dance floor may not be as large as some of the other clubs, and the interior may not be as posh as say, Eden, do not expect craziness that goes in it to be any less crazy.  If you haven’t been to Club Mass, I would recommend that you at least check it out.  As like any other club, the peak hour is around 1am.

For those who want everything laid out for you, here is SeoulGrid’s guide to enjoying Club Mass to its fullest (using its geographic advantages of being situated in one of the busiest streets in Seoul).

Game plan

9pm:  Meet your friends in front of Subway exit #6.  Choose one from one million soju bars near by and pregame there.  There are always those who show up late, so you could tell them to join you while you and your buddies are embracing all that is necessary for a good night in a liquid form contained in green bottles.  Start getting tipsy.

11pm: Go for another round at another venue (it must be hard choosing from the other 999,999 soju bars left for you to pick!).  You start talking loudly.  You would sing Celine Dion songs without a slightest hint of embarrassment in a karaoke.

12:30pm: Head on over to Mass.  The scene should be getting warmed up by now.  Switch to auto-pilot and let your night drive itself.

So you must be wondering… which of the three clubs is the best?

I feel like Club NB and Harlem cannot be compared to Club Mass  mainly for one reason: Club NB and Harlem play different type of music altogether, targeting different types of crowd altogether.  I feel like hip hop music in general seems to attract younger generation of clubbers than house music, as hip hop is more incorporated into Korean pop culture scene, making it more familiar to an average person.  So it really comes down to your  preference in music.  Or I’ve seen cases where people shift their music preference to whichever type was played in clubs they had most fun with recently.  So I suggest you try hip hop as well as electro/house music clubs.

Directions: Get out at Gangnam Stn. exit #6.  Make a left as soon as you get out of the exit into an alley, then make a right.  Walk straight for about 2 minutes until you reach an intersection.  You will see Club Mass on your right with all the LED lights flashing in your face.  It’s less than 5-minute walk from the station, and hard to miss really.

I never went to Mass, how much is cover?

  • hansinseoul

It’s 20,000 won I think. The best thing about mass is its location. people tend to be younger. and i don’t think Mass’ dance floor is much smaller than bigger clubs like eden. i have fun when i go to mass

We went there last night and we were not allow to enter the club. There were 2 guards saying that we are over the age limit. (Btw we are in mid 20s to early 30s, Singapore chinese dont speak korean, we tried to speak to them but they just refuse to let us in – ten of us.) Then came a groups of 6 whites age about 30s, straight away they were allow to enter…….. we ask the guards why they just dont bother us. SO WE LEFT……. TO CLUB VOLUME. CLUB MASS IS A RACIST CLUB NEVER GO THERE. THEY SHOULD STATE THAT ”ONLY KOREANS AND WHITES ARE WELCOME, OTHERS RACES ARE OFF”

  • Richard

I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve been to clubs with my other asian friends but got in without any problem. I figure that if you got into Volume, you had good dresscode as well.

  • Roy

Yes we enter Club Volume with no hassle at all. Straight away they let us in…….. That place (Club Volume was GREAT) Club Mass was THUMPS DOWN………. NOT RECOMMANDED AT ALL.

  • Richard

thanks for sharing your experience with us Roy!

  • markchoi

hmm never had the problem before with my friends

  • RBn

it’s just tacky… DJ Sneak & Kenny Dope are important DJ names, but kind of faded glory… the others aren’t worthy calling world-class DJs. Seoul needs some education in dj-culture ;)

  • James

@RBn: Mass is more of, as the article puts it, a club for the “casual clubbing crowd.” It’s not considered one of Seoul’s top clubs, and as such it’s not expected that they would bring in big name DJs. If big name DJs are your thing, check out Volume, Eden, Answer, and Heaven.

Basically what Roy said! Went into club mass last night. Terrible! Two of my friends were given a really really hard time cause of they are African American and thinking one was an army dude when he actually works for a hagwon teaching English. Left the place and tried to get a refund, but no deal. Bouncers were assholes and like ‘no speak English’. Another example of racism in Korea. Ridiculous. I’m Korean American and it still amazes me to see how racist Koreans are. Disappointing. Don’t go to Mass….not worth your money to support a club that is basically promoting racism.

This club infringes human rights – I could not enter this club because the security guy decided that I am too old for this club.::)

I went to MaSS my last night in Seoul with a buddy I met at my hostel…
Keep in mind it was a Thursday night (foreigners were free before 12am) and we arrived JUST before 12am and I left at 6am.

The music was FUCKING great!  It went from lighter house to darker and deeper trance.  It BARELY touched on the poppier shittier side of these genres… In fact I think I recognized one song the whole night.  I thought the music was good from start to finish..  No shitty MC, just pure house/trance.

People were chill.  Some girls were daring enough to go out of their ways and dance the pole.  One girl was really into it and stripped down to her bra.  I didn’t really make an effort to meet any girls because the plan was to dance and if I wound up banging one I would have missed my flight at 10am that morning.  Dudes were chill too.  Met some nice guys from Switzerland, the bartenders were friendly, DJ’s acknowledged me with a smile and fist pound when I told them they were doing a good job.

I think it’s a good place to pick up.  I’m feel I’m a good dancer and I’m confident and I had a handful of girls smiling at me via body language let me know that they would at least have been down for a conversation and likely swap numbers.

Good place, I highly recommend it!
