SeoulGrid Guide to Clubbing Vol. 05

What’s up SeoulGrid — everyone have fun last weekend? I know I had a blast at Funkagenda, and I heard from tons of people that Oakenfold was epic. I even know one diehard clubber who hit up Volume, Answer, and Eden all on Saturday night so as to not miss anything. [Haha, I hope he's reading this -- rock on bro.]

No Paul Oakenfolds this week, but that doesn’t mean we can’t party hard. Unfortunately, Club Volume is closed again to finish renovations (these things always seem to take longer than expected), and should be opening finally next Friday. Fortunately, one of the other clubs has a really unique DJ coming in this weekend who’s supposed to put on an awesome show. Keep reading for the lowdown…

SeoulGrid Top Pick: Kavinsky @ Answer

Party Info:

Fri @ Answer: Astro Voize: Punk as FXXX

Astro Voize Club Answer

That’s right. I’m going to post the same video I posted last time for Astro Voize. It’s just that good.

So what makes Astro Voize awesome?

1) Musical Selection.

2) Stage presence.

I don’t really need to say anything else. If you like electro, Astro Voize is amazing. If you don’t like electro, there’s something wrong with you. [Just kidding. But seriously... What's wrong with you?] Definitely check them out if you haven’t seen them play yet. And if you have already seen them play, I don’t need to convince you. If you go to this show, you will not be disappointed.

Fri @ Eden: Colors Party Code Green

Colors Green Point Club Eden

Resident DJs: Yeonjun, Sundance, Ziro, E-you, Brandon, Ashoka

Just a regular club night. Video is resident DJs at Eden. The resident DJs usually play tech-house and minimalism.

I suppose we’re supposed to wear green? Haha don’t quote me on that though.

Fri @ Heaven: The Originals

The Originals Club HeavenResident DJs: Sunshine, Shai, Mindbender, Roxy, Brain-X, Psytonic, Fin, Catalyst

Ok, can someone please explain to Club Heaven what a “Guest DJ” is? Every week Heaven cycles their resident DJs and calls half of them “guests.” Like, I know for a fact that Roxy is a resident DJ at heaven, but she’s listed as a “guest DJ” this week. Yes, it’s a big deal to me. No, I can’t just let it rest.

Regardless, this is “Techno Vol. 2″ for Club Heaven. I couldn’t find any quality clips of their resident DJs online.

[Top Pick] Sat @ Answer: Kavinsky

Kavinsky @ Club Answer

A friend of a friend just saw Kavinsky in Tokyo and said that the show was incredible. People are calling him the next generation of French Electro, following in the footsteps of Daft Punk and Justice. After listening to his stuff, I can say his style is definitely one-of-a-kind.

Think synth film scores from the ’80s. Think SNES. Think Knight Rider meets Tron. [Speaking of SNES, did anyone here play Mega Man II? This game had one kickass soundtrack. Ok I'm a huge dork.] Anyway, If I wanted to sum up Kavinsky’s style in a word, I would have to go with “Neo-Retro,” if that makes any sense. So it’s like he came from some strange alternate universe where the ’80s was awesome.

Check out more of his music on Kavinsky’s Myspace. If you like what you hear, then I’ll see you Saturday!

Sat @ Eden: Kenny Dope & Louie Vega

Kenny Dope Louie Vega Club Eden

This duo goes under the name “Masters at Work” or MAW. The video I posted is a bit more upbeat than a lot of their stuff, but it was the highest quality video I could find. For the most part their style seems to be a kind of funky, soulful minimal house with some Latin influence. Definitely an ineresting sound if it’s your style.

Sat @ Heaven: Psytonic Super Live

Psytonic Superlive Club Heaven

Note that this is a live show — “Drum, Guitar, Keyboard, Vocal” — but I can’t find a clip of Psytonic playing a live set online.

Psytonic’s usual style is psytrance, so if that’s your thing, it should be quite interesting to see psytrance accompanied by live rock.

Closing Comments:

What did you guys think of the new layout for this installment? Easier to navigate? Like it? Hate it? Let me know in the comments.

Next week we should finally see Club Volume reopen permanently, a thus our weekend megaclubbing options will increase by, well, 33.33%. And with so many options, it can be confusing to decide where to party. But fear not, dear reader! That’s what we’re here for. So tune in again next week for the lowdown on what’s happening in the Seoul club world. Party hard, SeoulGrid!

James

kenny dope is back in seoul again? he was at club function 2009 december he was dope haha

  • Trish

which party are you going to this weekend james?

  • hmm

I think you are trying to promote club answer too much, because your top pick was club answer for the past 4 weeks (except for Oakenfold which you also highly recommended club answer). i think you have to diversify your choices of clubs. you are posting articles on personal choice basis and i think it is not just fair for the readers.

  • Richard

Hey, thanks for your concern. we aren’t trying to promote any venue at all, as we have no affiliation with any clubs (as a matter of fact, with any venues of any kind whatsoever). James is just writing about what his preferences are (while trying to be unbiased to a certain degree) and which parties he would recommend/attend.

But you’re right, we can’t keep putting up club answer every other week. Thanks for your comments, we’ll try to diversify (though diversifying for the sake of diversifying is not what we want either) our recommendations. =)

    Answer again?

Keep reaching for that Rainbow James, you’ll earn that Answer VIP card someday.

  • James

Haha, fair enough. Let’s review my picks:

    - Week 1: No club brings in a guest DJ except Eden (Sergio Fernandez, minimalism). Nothing special this weekend; I recommend Astro Voize since they’ve put on an amazing show every time I’ve seen them (including when they played at Eden last month).

    - Week 2: Clubs Heaven and Eden have resident DJs all weekend. Answer throws a Penthouse Lingerie Party on Friday and brings a Hed Kandi guest DJ with live drummer on Saturday. No contest.

    - Week 3: Answer brings in Michael Canitrot. Eden brings in Peter Bailey (minimalism), Heaven a guest DJ I’ve never heard of. No contest. (By the way, if you missed Canitrot this weekend, then you missed an awesome show!)

    - Week 4: I recommend Paul Oakenfold at Volume narrowly over Funkagenda at Eden. Answer gets small coverage at the bottom.

    - Week 5: Answer brings in a DJ whose latest EP has music bloggers in a frenzy, easily one of the biggest-hyped DJs in the past few months. No contest.

So, which week’s choice do you disagree with exactly? Fact of the matter is, any recommendation is inherently biased, so either you value my opinion or you don’t. But I’ve clubbed in Seoul consistently twice a week for the past year and a half, and if I learned one thing in that time it’s that better music results in a better party, every single time.

So I’m just going to keep recommending the party that I think will have the best music, and if that’s Answer 10 times in a row, so be it. If I were to pick a different party just to avoid picking the same club twice in a row, well then that would be biased, wouldn’t it? Just know that I’m not the type of person to change my answer on a Scantron simply because I answered ‘A’ five questions in a row ;)

By all means, feel free to let me know if you disagree with my choices. But keep in mind my recommendation is based only on the DJ and the theme of the party — so disagree only because you thought there was a better DJ that weekend, as the venue itself is irrelevant to me.

    Cheers guys!

    James

  • On a different note…

  • Christine

it’s a matter of personal preference. everyone has different taste. so chill out guys ^^ xoxo

  • Sean

Well tonight I’m going to find out if Answer is as good as you say it is… I’ve only been to Eden twice so far but both times were awesome (at least the parts I can remember…ㅋㅋㅋ). I’m looking forward to seeing this new DJ…
